Do you ever start writing a story without knowing how it will end? I've done that. As the plot develops, I keep asking myself, "Then what happened?" Answering that question keeps me going until I reach the inevitable conclusion.
Have you ever started with an ending in mind, and then you had to figure out what story would lead to that ending? I've done that, too.
When I wrote a lot of academic papers, I often used outlines to guide me. I don't do that with fiction, but if I were writing longer pieces, I might. If I ever write the novel that's on my mind, it will need organization.
One thing I learned from writing all those papers, is that it's not necessary to write it in the order it will be read. Often, the introduction is the last part to be written. This approach might work for a novel as well. I could write each scene separately, and then put them all together in sequence.
