What to Call It

I find titles problematic. Typically, I will use one or two words, often lifted from the story, but I don't think my titles are doing me any favors.

I had a relative who was a writer. He hated it when editors changed his titles, but overall I think they did the right thing. Helping to settle his estate, I looked through his files and read the acceptance and rejection slips he had saved over the years. His titles were often changed because they gave away the ending. That's a problem, especially if you write mystery and suspense.

I'd like my titles to set the mood, get the story started, or grab the reader's attention. I don't want the reader to feel that the title was more interesting than the story, or that it wasn't a good match for the story.
